Frequently Asked Questions

1. If I am interested, how do I go about signing up?

Call Christina at 208-589-8872 and set up an introductory lesson.

2. Which classes are for beginners?

Once group classes are made available, students will receive three introductory lessons to learn basic stances, blocks, punches, kicks, etc. Afterwards, students may participate in their age group class.

3. How will classes be divided?

When group classes are first made available, their will be four classes from different age ranges: 3-5 years old, 6-10 years old, 11-15 years old, and 16 years old and up.

4. What happens if I miss a class or go on vacation?

There are no penalties for missing a class for any reason. The way in which we bill allows for flexible schedules.

5. Do you require contracts?

Yes but not in the normal sense. Call for more information on this subject.

6. How do private lessons work?

Private lessons are one-on-one instruction between an instructor and student. Typically a 30-minute lesson used to work out details of katas (forms), techniques, and/or basics.

7. How much time does martial arts training require?

The more time you put into your training the more you will see results. If your schedule only allows you to attend one day a week, then make that one day as beneficial as possible. Attending class is only part of the equation, if you cannot physically attend class, practice at home or in your head (mental practice).

8. Do you participate in tournaments?

At this time, we are not participating in tournaments.

9. How do you handle tests and ranking?

Tests are given when students have grasped the knowledge and “information” required to be promoted (see belt requirements). Students are promoted based on THEIR ability not their ability when compared to a fellow students.

10. What is the rank progression in the school?

Students begin as a White belt. The student then progresses through Yellow, Advanced Yellow, Orange, Advanced Orange, Purple, Advanced Purple, Blue, Advanced Blue, Green, Advanced Green, 3rd Brown, 2nd Brown, 1st Brown, and 1st through 9th Black.

11. What should a Martial Art School look like?

Don’t be fooled by schools with fancy decor. The facility doesn’t guarantee quality instruction. After speaking with Ed Parker Jr., the son of the man who created American Kenpo Karate, I came to find out he too began teaching out of a garage, like myself. I was further excited to discover that Bruce Lee taught people in their driveways. The quality of instruction definitely, outweighs the location.

12. How do you know if an instructor is qualified?

If is very important to verify any claims of qualification. Mrs. Davis is a Certified Instructor through the AKLA (American Kenpo Legacy Association). You can check this by visiting www.arnis.org. She also has a diploma in Fitness and Nutrition through the International Correspondence School. In May of 2007, she will graduate Idaho State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education.

Just because someone claims to be rated #1, doesn’t mean they have been rated by anyone. It is your right and responsibility to verify any claims. Go in with your eyes open.

13. When is an instructor FULLY qualified to promote students?

Once an instructor reaches the rank of 3rd Degree Black Belt, they are qualified to promote students without consulting with an instructor of higher rank. Because of this, Mrs. Davis submits her student’s tests to her Sensei, Masters Eric and Kevin Lamkin.

14. Do you have family rates?

Yes. They are determined on a case-by-case basis.

15. How Much Do Martial Arts Lessons Cost?

If a school is charging $50.00 a month, there is a reason it's so cheap. If a school is charging $150.00 a month, there is usually a reason the instructor feels it is worth more. J&A Karate attempts to charge a reasonable amount based on the area and quality of instruction. Call for prices.

16. How do I cancel my martial arts program?

Just give us 15 days notice of intent to cancel.

17. What Should I Do If My Child Wants To Quit?

This is a very sensitive question. Here are a few options: (A) Allow the child to take a month off and maybe they will want to return (B) Allow the child to take time off, maybe the martial arts is not for them and they will not want to return (C) Ask them to give you one more month, sometimes they will decide they still want to do martial arts or (D) Ask them to give you one more month and maybe they will decide they still don’t like martial arts. The choice is ultimately up to the parents. I as an instructor have no right to lean you one way or the other.

18. Is sparring necessary to learn karate?

Yes, it is a necessity. You do not begin to spar until you have demonstrated control over your techniques. Sparring is a way for students to practice practical application of the information they are learning.

19. How much is the Karate uniform?

Uniforms are typically around $30.00. This includes the pants, top and a white belt. We also allow parents to sell their old uniforms at discounted rates to fellow members.

20. What do I need to bring to my lessons?

A willingness to learn and a positive attitude along with your uniform and any other items the instructor specifies.
